A few years ago I came across a recipe for chicken soup in the Reader’s Digest. This recipe came from a study at the University of Nebraska that the shows that chicken soup does slow cold symptoms. Remembering fondly how my father would make soup (especially when the Steelers were on) I embraced the idea of taking a stab at it.
My first venture went pretty well except that the chicken fell apart and I spent an inordinate amount of time trying to extract the bones. I solved that problem by purchasing a “turkey stuffing bag” made of cheesecloth, placing the chicken in the “bag”, tying it off and placing it in the soup. It worked like a charm.
Another problem (if you call it that) is that it does produce quite a bit of soup – which is great. But it needs to cool down properly. So I purchase several containers (some single serving size) and placed them in the freezer remembering to not open the freezer door until the next day. And that worked as well.
I love to make this soup for others. Over Christmas I had the opportunity to make this for Marti and her son Tom. They both complimented me on the soup and it provided several additional meals including lunch for both Marti and I. I consider it a blessing to be able to make this for both of them (I do like to cook for Marti).
Today I heard God speaking to me today to be a blessing. So I ventured out this afternoon to the grocery store and came back and made chicken soup for mom and was able to freeze several containers worth. This should do her for quite some time. She was extremely appreciative and said that dad would have enjoyed it as well.
Chicken soup can not only be used to help slow down cold symptoms but can be a blessing to others. You might not be able to make chicken soup but if Jesus asks you to be a blessing to others just do it. Who knows - you may just get a blessing in return.
